Our Horses: Cedar

Cedar was adopted in 2002 as a four-year-old mare. Cedar came from the Wall Canyon Herd in Nevada. She is a big, attractive buckskin that appears to have had a foal. Her capture date was Oct. 31, 2002. Pregnant mares are sometimes foaled out in BLM facilities and the babies are weaned and adopted separately. Travel to adoptions is very hard on babies and Cedar was held at Susanville, California and sent to Cedar City, Utah for her adoption.

Cedar was accustomed to humans because she was in a holding facility for 19 months. However, she was very aloof and showed no desire to interact with people. Her response was to raise her head as high as possible to look down on you. She would evade any attempt at contact and seemed numbed out.

Now, Cedar lowers her head and greets you with her soft, kind eyes. She would rather be alone or with people than with the herd. Cedar is solid in mind and body. People are immediately drawn to her. She has been ridden and is quiet under saddle. She is green and needs a year of training to be ready. Cedar’s future is bright.

2009 Update:

During the fall of 2009 Windhorse hosted a group from The Bridge, a healing place for those suffering with debilitating injuries, illness and/or pain.  One of the participants mentioned that she had ridden quite a lot before she broke both of her hips and that it was her dream to ride again.  Cedar, with her gentleness, confidence and sensitivity made that dream come true.
